Prevalence of Intestinal Protozoa among Primary School-Aged Children in Selected Communities in Yenagoa Metropolis, Bayelsa State

The prevalence of intestinal protozoa among primary school-aged children in five communities Yenagoa Metropolis, Bayelsa State was investigated. Faecal samples were collected from 300 presumably healthy the selected within Metropolis. Laboratory analysis carried out on faecal using zinc sulphate floatation method and formol-ether concentration technique. Demographic data age, sex nature school attended (public or private), recorded at point sample collection. Out investigated, 61 (20.3%) positive for one type other. Etegwe Community highest (30%), followed by Okutukutu (25%), Agudama (18.3%), Opolo (16.7%) while Azikoro least (11.7%). Among identified, Entamoeba histolytica (57.4%), Giardia lamblia (24.6%), coli (13.1%) Toxoplasma gondii (4.9%). age range 24%, 22.4%, 22% 10% 13-15 years, 10-12years, 7-9 years 4-6years respectively. More male (23.6%) infected compared to females (17.5%). laboratory further revealed that more attend public (24.7%) than those private schools (14.6%). Increased personal hygiene, sanitation, provision toilet facilities, good drinking water, reduction contact with flooded areas health education will reduce these study area.
